Nearly everyone gets headaches once in a while. In Australia, it’s estimated that over half of all pain medication used is taken for headache pain. Moreover, approximately 2 million Australians have migraines, more than the number of people with diabetes or heart disease. Most people treat their headaches with over the counter pain relievers. Occasional use is generally safe for most people. However, frequent use can lead to rebound headaches, increased pain with headaches, addiction, liver damage, and other side effects and complications.
There are actually different types of headaches, from the basic tension headache, to the often complex and difficult to treat migraine. The most common headaches are:
Tension - Tension headaches are easily the most common. These are caused by stress and you may also feel pressure in your temples or tightness in your neck.
Cluster - Cluster headaches are sudden, severe and tend to occur in cycles. Men are more likely to experience these headaches than women. Cluster headaches can come with watery eyes and runny nose. In most cases the symptoms, including the pain, are limited to one side of the head.
Sinus - Sinus headaches are usually a symptom of a severe head cold or sinus infection. These headaches are typically accompanied by congestion and a feeling of pressure in the face.
Migraines - Possibly the most debilitating of headaches, migraines don’t respond well to most pain relievers. Migraines come with a wide range of symptoms, depending on the sufferer and the trigger. Migraines may be preceded by sensory disturbance. These can start anywhere from a few minutes to a day before the migraine and are usually visual, but may also affect the other senses. Migraines may also come with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound during the migraine. Even after the migraine, sufferers may experience fatigue, confusion, or moodiness that may last hours to days after migraine pain subsides.
Chiropractic for Headaches Pain relievers are great for relieving occasional pain from tension headaches, but do nothing to treat the underlying cause of more frequent pain or more serious headaches. With the help of a chiropractor, it is possible to identify and treat the root cause of your headaches and reduce or even prevent future headaches.
At Eastland Chiropractic we look for the imbalances that could be triggering your headaches using such diagnostic tools as muscle testing and applied kinesiology. Then we restore balance with gentle chiropractic.
We also analyze your diet for evidence of any allergies or food intolerances that could be exacerbating your headaches. Some of the most common culprits are:
● Gluten - Protein found in wheat and certain other grains, often used to give texture to processed foods
● Casein - Protein found in dairy products
● Nightshades - Tomatoes and potatoes are in this family
Foods that cause debilitating pain for some people have no ill effects on others. That’s why we make a point to look for your individual triggers. In some cases it may be difficult to identify whether some food is bothering you and we may recommend a 5-week elimination diet.
Patients with severe migraines, or in some other circumstances, we sometimes recommend blood tests to check levels of mature red blood cells, Folate and Vitamin B12.
Our individualized treatment approach isn’t limited to nutrition. Your entire treatment plan is specifically tailored to you. Even patients with nearly identical headaches will not necessarily get relief from the same treatment.
If you aren’t getting the relief you want from pain relievers, call Eastland Family Chiropractic on 03 9095 7990 to find out what we can do for you.
